FRENCH ESTABLISHMENTS (CHANGE OF NAME) ORDER, 1954 Whereas by virtue of the agreement, dated the 21st October, 1954, entered into between the Government of India and the Government of France, the Central Government has jurisdiction in and in relation to the areas comprised in the French Extablishments in India known as pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe andYanam and commonly referred to as "the French Extablishment in India" or "the French Establishments", And whereas it is expedient to re- name the said Establishments; Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Sec. 3 and 4 of the Foreign Jurisdiction Act, 1947 (47 of 1947), and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, the Central Government hereby makes the following Order, namely :- 1. . :- This Order may be called the French Establishments (Change of Name) Order, 1954. 2. . :- In this Order, "the State of Pondicherry" means the areas which immediately before the commencement of this Order were comprised in the French Establishments in India and known as Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. 3. . :- On and after the commencement of this Order, the French Establishment in India shall be known as the State of Pondicherry, and any reference by whatever form of words generally to the said Extablishment in any law for the time being in force or in any indenture, instrument or other document shall be construed as a reference to the State of Pondicherry.
