Short title and application :- (1) These rules may be called the Grapes (Grading and Marking) Rules, 1937. (2) They shall apply to grapes produced in India. 2. Grade designations :- Grade designations to indicate the quality of grapes of certain varieties produced in India are set out in column 1 of Schedules I to VII-D. 3. Definition of quality :- (1) The general characteristics of quality indicated by such grade designations shall be as follows : All berries shall be firm and in good condition and reasonably mature. None of the berries on a bunch shall be soft or over-ripe. (2) The special characteristics of quality indicated by such grade designations are set out, against such designations, in columns 2 to 7 of Schedules I to VII-D. 4. Grade designation marks :- The grade designation mark shall consist of a label bearing the design set out in Schedule VIII-D, specifying the grade designation and of the following colour :- Grade designation Special \Colour of label White. A B \Red. Blue. 5. Method of marking :- The grade designation mark label shall be securely affixed to each Package of grapes and shall clearly show the following particulars : (a) Variety. (b) Net weight. (c) Name of packing station. (d) Date of packing. 6. Method of packing :- ( 1) Containers may be either returnable or non-returnable. They shall be clean and suitable for the purpose. All packages shall be securely closed. (2) All packages of grapes of special grade shall be lined with white paper. (3) Packing material shall be used and shall be soft, clean and free of any taint liable to impart an objectionable flavour to the grapes. (4) The grapes in any container shall be reasonably uniform, of one grade and the top layer shall be representative of the entire contents of the package in respect of variety, size of the bunch, colour, maturity and freedom from defects. (5) Bunches shall be arranged and packed so as to prevent subsequent displacement in the course of transit. (6) Unripe grapes shall not be packed.
