Savings RULES FOR REGULATING TRAFFIC IN STREETS BY SURFACE MARKINGS, 1971 In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 21(1)(b) of the Hyderabad City Police Act, 1348 F, upon me. I, Abdus Salam Khan, I.P.S., Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad and Secunderabad make the following rules :- These rules shall come into force with effect from 1st February, 1972. 1. Short Title :- These Rules may be called "Rules for Regulating Traffic in Street by Surface Marking-1971. 2. Interpretations :- (a) Surface marking means a line, word or arrow or a combination of one or more of these inscribed on the surface of a Street by painting, in laying studs, reflectors or similar devices. (b) A longitudinal continuous line means a line of a minimum of 10 Cms. in width painted along the length of a street or part thereof, parallel to the kerbs. (c) A longitudinal broken line means a line of a minimum of 10 Cms. in width painted along the length of a street, or part thereof parallel to the kerb each portion of the line being one metre in length with gap of 1/2 metre. (d) A transverse continuous line means a line of a minimum of 10 Cms. in width painted across the width of a street or part thereof at right angles to the kerb. (e) An arrow means a representation of an arrow of a minimum of 10 Cms. in width with a head of similar width. (f) Driver means a driver of a motor vehicle, or an animal-drawn vehicle and shall include a person who propels or pulls a handcart and a rider of a bicycle or a cycle rickshaw. 3. Prohibitions :- (i) No driver of a vehicle shall cross or straddle longitudinal continuous line. (ii) No driver of a vehicle shall cross or straddle a longitudinal broken line except with due care and caution having due regard to vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the street and the safety of other street users. (iii) No driver of a vehicle shall proceed along the carriage way except in the direction indicated by an arrow painted in white, wherever it exists. 4. Pedestrian Crossings :- (A) Pedestrian crossings shall be denoted by means of white lines painted across the street, parallel to the kerb, with a minimum width of 30 Cms. and with a gap of a minimum of 30 Cms. to one another. 5. Halt Line :- When a transverse continuous line is painted on or in land into the surface of the road at the approach to a road junction, no driver shall drive a vehicle so that any part thereof projects beyond that line at any time when signal to stop is being given by a Police Officer or by means of traffic signal system. 6. . :- No driver of a vehicle when approaching a "STOP" surface marking placed at a street intersection and where for the time being there is no policeman to control traffic or where other signalling device is not installed shall proceed or turn to the left or right, without stopping to verify the conditions of traffic on the road which he desires to enter. 7. Segregation of Traffic :- (i) Where slow moving traffic is segregated from fast moving traffic in a street by means of painting a longitudinal continuous or broken lines, no cyclist, rickshaw-driver of an animal drawn cart or hand- cart shall cross the segregation line and ride or drive on the drive- way of the street intended for the motor-vehicles. (ii) Where traffic is segregated as mentioned above, no driver or rider of a motor vehicle shall cross the segregation line and drive or ride in the lane meant for the slow moving traffic except for the purpose of parking or turning. 8. Savings :- These Rules are supplemental to and not in derogation of any other existing provisions for controlling traffic.
